How to build an app with AI
Building with an AI agent is a skill of its own. Done well, it is remarkably fast. This guide covers the habits that get good results and the pitfalls that waste time.
Start with a clear, small goal
Vague requests get vague apps. Instead of "build me a social network," start with the smallest concrete piece: "a page that lists items with a title and a photo." Clarity gives the agent something real to build, and you something real to react to.
Work in small steps
Ask for one feature at a time, look at the running result, then ask for the next. Small steps keep you in control, make problems easy to spot, and let you change direction cheaply. Big all-at-once requests are harder to review and easier to get wrong.
Review what the agent writes
AI-generated code can be wrong, insecure, or incomplete. Read the changes, test the behaviour, and ask the agent to explain anything unclear. You are the developer of record; the agent is a fast pair of hands, not a guarantee.
Be specific about the things that matter
- Say what the app should do, and just as importantly what it should not.
- Mention constraints early, like which data to store or how a screen should feel.
- When something is wrong, describe the actual behaviour you see, not just "it is broken."
Handle secrets safely
When your app connects to a paid service, put your API keys in the Secrets panel rather than pasting them into code or prompts. That keeps credentials out of your project files.
