Plan before you build with an AI agent
A few minutes of planning makes AI builds go far better. When you know the goal, the data, and the first slice, mobileCoder's agent has what it needs to build the right thing.
Why planning matters even with an agent
It is tempting to type a one line request and hope for magic. Sometimes that works for a quick sketch, but for anything you care about, a vague request leads to an app that is close to what you meant and wrong in ways that are annoying to fix.
Planning does not mean writing a long document. It means getting clear on a few things before you start so the agent builds toward a target you actually chose. Clear input gives clearer output, and it makes the live preview easy to judge because you know what you were aiming for.
Define the goal in one or two sentences
Start with who the app is for and what it should let them do. Keep it plain.
- Who uses it, such as a small team, customers, or just you.
- The main job it does, stated as an action, such as track orders or book appointments.
- What success looks like, such as a person can add an order and see its status.
If you cannot say the goal in a sentence or two, the app is probably trying to do too much at once. Narrow it until it fits.
Map the data before the screens
Most apps are easier to plan from the data up. Before you think about screens, think about the records the app stores.
- List the record types, such as an order, a customer, or a product.
- List the fields on each record and roughly what each holds.
- Note how records relate, such as an order belonging to a customer.
When you can describe the data clearly, the screens tend to follow naturally, and the agent has a solid base to build on. You can hand this description to the agent almost word for word.
Pick the smallest first slice
Resist the urge to describe the whole app at once. Choose the smallest version that is still useful and build that first.
For an order tracker, the first slice might be simply adding an order and viewing a list of orders. No accounts, no notifications, no reports yet. Once that runs and you have tested it, you add the next piece.
Small slices are easier to test, easier to review, and easier to correct. They also keep it clear which request caused which change, so when something breaks you know where to look.
Plan to review and test from the start
Build the checking into your plan, not as an afterthought. AI generated code can be wrong or incomplete, so decide up front how you will confirm each slice works.
- Write down what to test for each slice, such as adding, editing, and deleting a record.
- Plan to read the code for anything involving accounts, permissions, or money.
- Note outside services you will need so you can add your own keys in the Secrets panel when the time comes.
With a goal, a data map, a first slice, and a testing plan, you are ready to build, and the agent is set up to build the right thing.
